Care Tips for Your Gemstones and Jewelry

Gems are among the most durable of nature’s creations. With a little care, they will be as beautiful for generations to come as they are today. Keep in mind these gem care tips.

Cleaning your gemstone jewelry should be done in a bowl of water. Avoid cleaning in or over a sink as you could lose a precious piece. Put a few drops of ordinary dish detergent in a bowl of water. Using an old toothbrush or other soft brush, scrub gently behind the stone where dust and soap can collect. Then just rinse well and pat dry with a soft cloth or lay on a couple paper towels to dry.

A home ultrasonic cleaner should be used with extreme caution. It can be used to clean Ruby, Sapphire, Diamond, Amethyst, Citrine, Garnets, Chrysoberyl, and unadorned gold jewelry but it may damage gems like Emerald, Tourmaline, Peridot, Pearls, Coral, Lapis Lazuli, Turquoise and any gem that has many inclusions. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners with jewelry has patina or oxidized finishes. When in doubt, don’t use it.

To clean cameos, coral, amber and other soft gems gently scrub with a soft bristle toothbrush in warm water. If you must use a cleaning solution use a natural one with no ammonia. Just dip it in for only a few seconds and rinse with warm water immediately. After cleaning, moisturize the gem so that it does not become brittle and chip, break or fade. Use a fine mineral oil and apply with a q-tip. Let this soak on for a few hours. Then wipe off any oil that remains. You should do this at least once a year.

Remove your jewelry before vigorous activities, swimming or bathing. Pool water containing chlorine or seawater can damage or ruin your gems.

Every day household items can ruin your gemstone jewelry. Make sure you don’t expose your gems to the chemicals in cleaning products, hair care products, fragrances and cosmetics.

When getting dressed, put your jewelry on last. At the end of the day, take your jewelry off first. Store your jewelry in a cloth-lined box or pouch and keep them away from other jewelry, which might scratch them. Always store silver jewelry in an airtight location, such as in a zip lock bag in your jewelry box. When air hits your silver it causes it to tarnish more quickly. The more you wear your silver jewelry the less it will tarnish. Silver scratches easily so always use the softest cloth you can find to polish silver.
